Router Having Sporadic Outages or Hangups

Quote from jficquette:

Those routes use flash memory and they only have so many rewrites.

If firmware update doesn't work then probably time to get new router.

FWIW, I had a lynksys that worked great then started to hang up my connection on a regular basis. I did the firmware update and it worked great. It finally wore out which according to a friend who is an "expert"(g) was due to the flash memory wearing out.

Maybe the connections are dirty. You might try unplugging and plugging in everything a few times, see if the problem disappears. Unplug and plug the main power cord too, sometimes that gets intermittent.

Holy crap - some of the advice here is hilarious.

OP: When the internet appears to freeze, are you able to log into the router? If so you could check the status and logs and see what's going on.

Good stuff guys, I am learning something new every day.

So I'm going to replace the router.

Anyone have specific recommendations? I have some tradein credit saved up over @ Tigerdirect, so will probably buy there.

Thanks!

wired or wireless? with USB or not? are you planning to use it with P2P?
belkin works fine for me. very user friendly. i have one for 5 years-died, bought another one and pretty happy with it.

Update:

I downloaded a firmware update, which also had me reset the router to factory settings. So now the router has the latest firmware update and it did a complete reboot. Running good so far, but we'll see. If this doesn't do the trick, going to order a new one.
