Fiat Chrysler shares halted after EPA accuses automaker of using deceptive software

Shares of Fiat Chrysler were halted Thursday after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency accused the automaker of using software that allowed excess diesel emissions in about 104,000 vehicles.

The U.S.-listed shares of Fiat Chrysler plunged more than 18 percent Thursday after Reuters first reported the news.

The EPA alleged the automaker violated the Clean Air Act by installing and failing to disclose "engine management software in light-duty model year 2014, 2015 and 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Ram 1500 trucks with 3.0 liter diesel engines sold in the United States."

Volkswagen is paying 20 bln for about 450.000 cars... so, thats 45k per car.
That's an equivalent of 4.5 bln for Fiat Crysler, 30% of market cap of 2 days ago....

That's the reported number I think. Chances are it will be much reduced. This will be a great buying opportunity for Fiat-Chrysler -- after the smoke clears of course. Of the big three, they were able to shed the most dead weight, and Fiat ownership gives them access to top notch engineering and design. They had that with Mercedes, but Mercedes had all the dead weight to deal with. Fiat failed in the U.S. in the 70s, mainly because of dealer support. Now they are in the driver's seat. It will be different. Just my opinion of course, a contrary one at that, I will be buying into Fiat Chrysler when the time is right.

No, it's settled I think. Volkswagen has agreed to 14.5 bln last year and now agreed to another 5 fine for criminal conduct...

I like how finally, some executives are being charged, and one I even believe was arrested at the airport. The norm these days is that a corporation can do anything because supposedly there is nobody to charge. They never even have to admit fault, just pay a fee. I do wonder if anyone will actually do time for this.
