I am of the view that people were unduly influenced by a confluence of an intentional barrage of disinformation and events that intervened during the 2016 election campaign. It seems many of those who voted for Trump on the basis of disinformation have subsequently changed their mind about Trump's fitness for the Presidency.
I do believe it is right to say that democracies, if they are to be maintained , require an educated populace. But even a sufficiently educated populace may not be prepared for a pathological liar who is skilled at playing to peoples fears and prejudices, i.e., a demagogue. It seems many will completely overlook, or readily rationalize away, a charismatic candidate's severe, and dangerous personality disorders. The surprisingly strong popular vote for Biden this past November might be more due to an acquired, strong rejection of Donald Trump after four years of chaos than it is a reflection of enthusiasm for Biden/Harris.
I may still be one of the few in these forums that recognize Trump's psychological disorders are so severe as to virtually cross over into insanity. This has been on display over an over again. Those who spoke of his actions as though they were in any way normal, wise, or constitutional may have been speaking out of fear of retaliation, as he made a habit of retaliating against anyone who would not indulge his bad manners and lawless, chaotic behavior. Alternatively, the sycophants he surrounded himself with may have been blinded by political ideology, or personal ambition. They were willing to lie for him and defend him when he was clearly wrong. Many had their reputations sullied by association with him.
