Mav, think Church of England. It is why the pilgrims left, among other things. You presume the the church will not apply pressure at the state and local levels, mainly because of where you live. Outside of the cities, or in balkanized cities, the church has tremendous power.

We have like 500 different religions in this country. We have thousands upon thousands of churches of which none of them even agree with each other.
