Because societies that don't embrace it will be at an economic disadvantage. They will not be competitive with those that do. Who wants to compete with their dishwasher? I'd rather let my dishwasher wash the dishes than refusing to let it take one of my jobs and somehow threaten my value as a human. Basically AI will give humans the opportunity to allocate more resources to more interesting problems. We'll never run out of problems to solve. So I hope AI displaces a lot more than 1/3 of all jobs.

One of the first problems will be what to do with all those people who lose their jobs. Its a delicate balance, and losing even 1% of jobs will greatly tip this balance. I imagine lots of unrest and uprising, and if rich people and governments don't ensure there is enough opportunity for all, much of the money will be spend on security. In an orderly society that is fair, rich people can enjoy life, but once too many people start seeing they are getting screwed, I imagine one thing that rich people will never get enough of is security.
The way robotics and in general AI will transform our lives will be monumental, on a similar scale than the invention of the internet.
The biggest problem however is unresolved. Hundreds of millions worldwide will be out of job. But not everyone of them has an aptitude for mathematics and computer science. How will all the displaced earn money in the future. It is such a serious issue and worry that some of the smartest scientists and philosophers on this planet are gathering frequently to find solutions to this problem. AI will eventually even replace 80 to 90 percent of workers in the legal and medical fields. We are not just talking about factory jobs but highly skilled work, too. Computers can nowadays compose music that cannot be differentiated from human composers. Algorithms can compose literature that is getting further perfected by the day. AI is already capable of doing legal research and digging through millions of pages of legal code to build cases. We are not talking just about a few factory lines and a dumb car with few sensors attached but applications that displace the majority of the entire workforce.

What works for one community may not necessarily work for another living in different circumstances and things become even more complicated on a global scale.
So you think most people are completely stupid and cannot learn a new trade or career? (I don't mean to sound confrontational or overly aggressive...but I don't think AI is anywhere near as far along as you might think.) Although I hope that I'm wrong. AI currently struggles with basic image recognition (such as, "Does this photo contain a motorcycle?"). Sure, it can parse a novel quickly, but it will be unable to answer interpretive questions that a middle school student can answer. How about the reading comprehension questions on the GRE or LSAT? So far, all AI that I have seen is algorithmic and very specialized around one task. It's great at solving very structured problems (like short-term trading). It's a long way from artificial general intelligence which requires more understanding / comprehension and judgement.
I think you should read up on the latest updates on AI progress. I work in this space and can assure you that you are indeed wrong.
I remember when there were no call centres,no mobile phone shops, no internet techies, no computer systems analysts,programmers,software/hardware vendors. Jobs will come- new jobs,smarter ways of working. the rich will get richer plus ca change
I seriously can't see what is wrong with as many robots doing the job as possible.
People will adapt. Sure one does not learn computer science in one day, or one year; but in 5 years or 10 years most can.

Most? Wow. People cannot even put in an effort to disseminate fake news and facts. How do you expect someone to comprehend even the basic building blocks in computer science? I think it is optimistic to assume that a max 10% in society would even be capable to graduate with a CS degree. And that is computer science,not the hard core math and stats required to not only comprehend AI models but advance them.
It doesn't matter. Automation is inevitable and an entire new economic ecosystem will Shift into dominance as we enjoy the next gilded age.
It's guaranteed to happen.
