I'm more than a little surprised by all this. I would have thought that modern mobos use flash (or some other non-volatile) memory, which doesn't require battery power to maintain settings, and the battery's function is simply to keep the clock running.

Very strange.

That would probably cost $.50 more.

These CMOS batteries are supposed to last like 5 years or whatever... but... when in doubt, change it out. It is only a USD $2 item. Will save you from pulling many of your hairs, as I did to mine.
