Ridin' with Biden

There’s a lot of people I know my age who are white, educated, not super political, and make low six figures that are voting Democrat, because in their eyes the GOP has become a complete joke/the stupid party. Some of them voted for Romney and moderate Republicans in the past, because they didn't want government to get too large, but Trump became a bridge too far. They're pro-choice, believe in climate change (though not really sure what to do about it), and have always been for gay marriage. They might not agree with the trans community on all their issues, but they're not obsessed with it like the modern GOP is. They're not obsessed with guns and don't understand why people need AR-15's. They aren't concerned about the illegal immigrants taking over the country or the "browning of America", but they do want criminals locked up and something to be done with the homeless causing chaos. They're not obsessed with racial issues, but realize the system isn't equitable and think bad cops should be held accountable. However, they're not going to support something like reparations. They aren't begging for tax cuts, but aren't looking to pay more either. They are concerned about the debt unlike politicians in Washington. They generally believe in taking personal responsibility and not relying on the government for everything they need. Their college was already paid for and don't want to pay for the college of anybody, except maybe their own kids someday. The idea of the government running all of healthcare would scare the shit out of them. They got vaccinated and generally followed the mask mandates/social distancing rules without bitching a lot about them. While not everybody agrees on every issue and how to handle everything, the majority of my friends from my hometown can be boxed into this category. If the Democrats went too far to the left they could be lost.

Democrats are going to lose progressives and blacks if they stick with the Bidens of the party.I have voted for every Dem since I could vote.In 08 I started donating and volunteering and continued to do so for Obama in 2012,Hillery in 16 and Biden in 20.No more.I will never vote for a moderate Dem again and am willing to live with republican presidents until Dems decide to get their shit together. Not only are they losing life long Dems like myself, for the first time in 35 years a democrat president doesn't have a 90% + approval with blacks. The older blacks that support Dems no matter what will die off and the younger generation of blacks will not blindly support them as the older generation did.

Dems did well in 2022 because of abortion and progressive Dem candidates like Warnock and Kelly that supported every Dem bill that came up and supported ending the filibuster and candidates like Fetterman who will likely do the same. The power of the abortion issue wont last forever. When voters keep voting for dems and they don't change abortion laws or republicans decide to sacrifice 9 moderate republicans to make abortion legal nationwide so Dems can stop using it as an issue dems are fucked.

If progressives were willing to embrace some market-oriented concepts that would make things better. Universal healthcare has been something progressives have been fighting for, for a long time. Most Americans don't think we should be the only developed economy without it. However, the Democrats have gone to the extreme with the model they're proposing when we are used to a market-oriented system. For example, if progressives rallied around a Singapore-like healthcare model rather than Medicare-For-All model when Medicare itself is very expensive and has a shit ton of holes, I think they would do much better.

As long as private interest remains in industry it will remain corrupt. Get money out of politics then we can talk about letting industry back in.

You will never get sufficient support in this country handing the entire healthcare system over to bureaucrats. Why would you want to put it in their trust? Even if you got your people in there, eventually shitty politicians would come in and fuck it all up.

The whole purpose of non compete clauses is to make sure an employee you trained and invested in does not just take the client list and bolt and all the current market info and use it against the company. It has some merit and should not be banned outright. It also depends on how the employee leaves.

More than one year seems excessive in most cases unless you have proprietary and exclusive info. Banning it outright though seems typical government overkill to address a problem by just killing something instead of reforming.

There is a difference between a non-compete agreement and the non-disclosure agreements regarding proprietary information. Even if FTC bans non-compete agreement there will be no impact on non-disclosure agreements; you cannot take the client list or proprietary technical/marketing information as you leave a company.

Non-compete agreements undermine the competitiveness of the U.S. economy. At this point there are even pizza shops demanding their employees sign one year long agreements not to work elsewhere in the restaurant industry -- this agreements have reached the point of insanity -- undermining the "right to work".

Generally, courts will uphold a non-compete if there is a protectable interest and the clause is reasonable . Of course they should be banned for low wage earners and in low wage industries.

But in the upper levels non compete clauses for 1 year make a lot of sense in protecting corporate interests. A high level employee working at a consulting firm decides to leave and start their own firm can take the client list. That is not part of a non disclosure agreement which only covers confidential information or proprietary information. But the employee still knows who all the clients are and still knows the cost structure, job process, market insights gianed from training and all other aspects that a non disclosure agreement does not cover. Think of Michael Scott leaving Dunder Mifflin and starting his own paper company. The episode was doen jokingly but that happens quite a bit.

NDA does not stop an employee from taking the names of the clients or taking with them all that training and competitive advantage market info. Client lists are not necessarily proprietary info. Neither is all the training the employee received. In these cases non compete clauses for partners and senior executives are needed to protect the company and the investment they made in the person. NDA's do not cover this.

If an employee is let go, often severance is done in conjunction with non competes.

Non competes for lower level employees, low wage industries or even industries such as restaurants can certainly be struck down as those are ridiculous.

There are also ways around non competes as I have seen lawyers or partners get hired and basically spend the 1 year in an office behind the scenes until their non compete expires.

The 1 year often placed in the agreement is often just a cooling off period to allow the company time to deal with the high level employee leaving and the possible damage they can do. After all an employee that leaves can go to a big client and say "You were paying $600/hour for my work and my team there, I can work for you now on my own for $400/hour and I know your case file very well"
