Since when airport security is Senator's responsibility. He promptly passed the information on to FAA and that was the best he could do, the airport security is FAA's prerogative. What else was he supposed to do, stand guard at the airport or what?

BTW 9/11 was not caused by airport security breaches anyway - the terrorists did not sneak in guns or bombs aboard the planes, knives only which was absolutely legal at the time.

Well said. The airport security issue is a red herring.

To this day anyone can still legally and in plain sight get plenty of perfectly good shanks through airport security that are every bit as useful as those box cutters.

I travel ~200K miles a year domestically. I carry with me at all times an object that the xray machine can't see into. It is large enough that it could conceal multiple weapons (including multiple handguns, a sawed off shotgun AND a samurai sword simultaneously if so desired). In the past few years only twice (back closer to 9/11) have I been forced to check it. No more than 10 out of hundreds of passes through security has it been opened and searched. In NONE of those 10 was the search such that security would have even come CLOSE to finding said weapons had they existed. It is frightening how easy it is and would be to get both minor and major weapons on a plane.

Having said that, I'm not calling for El Al style security as it is not economically feasible and hijackers (at least in the US) will no more have the run of a plane as the passengers will not stand for it.
