Workers have been leaving jobs in restaurants, bars and hotels at the highest rate in decades. Each month so far this year, around 5% of this massive workforce have called it quits. In May alone, that was 706,000 people.

Low wages are the most common reason people cite for leaving food service work. But in one recent survey, more than half of hospitality workers who've quit said no amount of pay would get them to return.

That's because for many, leaving food service had a lot to do also with its high-stress culture: exhausting work, unreliable hours, no benefits and so many rude customers.

All the more reasons for robotics to be developed. In Japan, many restaurants are served by robots and they work perfectly fine, no tips required. And honestly all waiting staff do is bringing food from the kitchen to the table. Even without robots, you can still do that without the serving staff. If anybody has ever visited one of those lobster diners in Portland, Maine, they have no serving staff. All you do is go to the kitchen counter to give the order and then they give you a number. You just go to a table to wait. When your number is called over the loudspeaker, you go to the kitchen counter to pick up your food and then you go back to your dining table to eat them. Works perfectly fine, one of the best meals ever.

Hell - why don't we remove any and all possible workforce and shove robots in there. That way tons of people can lose their jobs and we not only get the pleasure of dealing with robots on basically every company's support call in line - but also we get the grand pleasure of them every time we walk into a brick & mortar business as well.

Grand idea indeed!! And it is being increasingly implemented in many countries around the world. It's the inevitable future, higher productivity, extremely low cost, lower need for population growth which is the highest source of pollution btw and wastage of resources.

you would be very happy to have that restaurant job no matter how lousy the job is.

Eventually wages will need to rise to pay the workers which will lead to restaurants/hotels increasing prices because people will pay the prices and then that will be the new standard. If you have money you will be able to take nice vacations and eat in nice restaurants. That doesn't mean you will be more happy if you have the money. It just means you will be able to afford the things that you think happiness comes from.

You people are just trolling without even reading ppl's post. But I am bored and have no life so I will indulge. You think people give s*** about having a job? To really have the "honour" of working to earn a living?? People are working because they have to. As the multiple stimulation checks have demonstrated, as long as they keep getting $$ in their pockets, they couldn't care less whether they work or not and they much rather prefer not to work. So all those restaurant workers or whatever workers, as long as they get paid, they would have no problem staying home. They couldn't care less if their jobs are taken over by robots and machines. These people who have quit "in droves" did not quit to protest about their wages being low; they quit because they could. SO why would they rebel?? LOL Rebel against whom?? The government who's now feeding them stimulus checks?? LOL You guys are delusional.
