Requesting Help Before Ordering Hardware!

Yep, Dell support is excellent and its ON site. And with holidays and all I am sure you can pick an extra 10%-20% off on the price.

Think about it.
I have an XPS 630 - 3 yrs old with old quad core and 4gb ram. Everything runs great. Make sure you get 64bit OS. its much faster and better. I have two geforce 9800GTs running 4 dell 19inchs with absolutely no problem.

Holy Cow! One day away from the Hardware forum and a thread with 11-page replies! I thought I'd missed out on a controversy! :D

The above config seems very good at the price indicated. I bought parts to build my own box and had spent just about that much, and without the 3-year warranty. :)

My comments:

1. Looks like they throw in "A" video card featuring the Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 chip. But didn't say what brand. "A major brand". This card may (or may not) drive 2 monitors. So if you want to support 3 monitors, you probably only need to purchase one more dual card. But you better match the brand (at least) and model (the best) they use. Or else there may be compatibility issues.

2. If you throw away the video card they give you (or see if they can knock down the price) and buy 2 dual cards yourself... I use a few of the PNY Technologies 8400 GS DMS cards, like this:

Fanless. (IMO better than the ones with a fan). I bought them on sale at about $50 each (new). From Fry's.

How do you trade?

Because that dictates what hardware or emphasis you should have. If you just need to box to plots many charts, the stated configuration is more than what you may need. If you do many automated strategy trading and lots of back-testing, that's different. I have 2 boxes built with i7-930 chip, 6GB RAM, Windows 7 64-bit OS. I use them primarily for TradeStation charts. Each drive 6 22/23/24-inch monitors. Any given time, I have about 50+ charts on each box. My hardware is more than adequate for my use.


RE: SSD versus 10k rpm versus 7500 rpm disk drives

SSD and 10k rpm drives are more expensive. Is cost-saving your objective? If not, you can beef up on the disk drive(s). Or else my opinion is there is no need for them. I have an Intel X25-V 40GB disk on one of my boxes. I did some benchmark tests of my own and concluded that there was no appreciable time saving on boot up nor application start up. So to me it was money not well spent. Same goes for the 10k rpm disk. Does your software do a lot of disk I/O? If so, worth spending. If not, not worth spending.


RE: noise

If you can hear your hard drive clicking, you probably have very acute hearing. In most cases the cooling fans of a computer are the loudest component compared to a disk drive. If you put your box underneath your desk like I do, those noises are hardly noticeable.
 
I would ogo with an ATI card. More exact a PowrColor 5770 Eyefinity 5.... that allows you to move up to 5 monitors should you deicde to ON ONE CARD, or 10 monitors on 2. Low power usage, too. Just purchasing them... VERY NICE.

Your inventory list looks good. A very nice system. Congrats! Some questions:

1) You said will using a single 40-inch monitor. What resolution is that monitor? Is it a HDTV also used as computer monitor? Or it's a higher resolution monitors like the Apple ones 2560 x 1440 or higher? If it is the latter case, your video card needs to match it too. And most video card only goes up to 1920 x 1080.

2) Looks like you will have a 80GB SSD. Not sure what you planned to back up data. You can back up on DVD (4.5 GB) or double layer DVD (9 GB) one disc at a time. But the DL DVR-RW discs are a bit expensive. You may want to pick up a USB disk drive, like 256GB or 500GB which are quite affordable nowadays. I do my daily backups on USB hard drives now and not mess with DVD discs any more.

3) From the list it seems that no operating system comes with it. (Seems a bit unusual). What OS are you planning on using?
 
i would skip the SSD and stick with good old HD. two of them. i was thinking about buying couple SSD's, just to play with it,but the more reviews i read on newegg about various SSD's-the more concerned i've become.looks like this technology have to mature a little bit more.
it's maybe ok for regular users laptops,but certainly not for trading PC,unless you have very specific needs.

Yes, HDTV 1080P I hopefully can use as a monitor because it's already purchased it. Open box return from Amazon Warehouse, no warranty, but 30 day return policy which should be enough to know if I want it or not. If I blew it, please let me know. I was a little concerned as non one writing amazon reviews of it use it as a monitor.

Bol, I see you live in Cali from your profile. Do you happen to live in SoCal and if you do might you be able to recommend anyone to do the installation?

Is the 80GB SSD good. Do you suggest another. A couple of folks here I believe recommended that. Do you back up anything related to trading? I will be using NinjaTrader.

I have the disc for Windows7 and was thinking it was alright to load on a second computer, what do you think? But I don't have the office suite with any software for it and will use my MacBook Pro for that or can add it later.
