Republicans/Libertarians - dead wrong on education

Quote from dddooo:

The research compares apples to apples i.e. good students in public schools to good students in private schools etc. While it goes without saying that a good motivated student will do just fine even if he/she is home-schooled, it has nothing to do with this thread which is discussisng whether private schools provide any more educational benefits than comparable public schools.

Very well, pardon my interjection then. Carry on.

I'll simply add that the 'educational benefit' that private schools provide is allowing whites and asians to avoid being thrown into classrooms with largely uneducable blacks and hispanics.

I see. So school vouchers are just to re-institute segregation. I've never thought about it that way. Now I am against it too.

I'm sure that rich liberals will be shocked, shocked I say, to read this. They will maintain they sent their, little princelings, the Al Gores and Chelsea Clintons, to private school because they liked the diversity.

Liberals are huge hypocrites on education. I at least understand where the teachers' unions are coming from. They are no different than other union goons. But the rich liberals who force poor and middle class families to suffer through hideous public schools while they send their own little darlings to a safe private school are beneath contempt. They are the ones supporting forced bussing rather than neighborhood schools, they are the ones who favor making it impossible to boot thugs and troublemakers from school, they are the ones forcing idiotic curricula. Of course, they would never expose their own children to such an environment. They are destined to be tomorrow's leaders after all.

Quote from nononsense:

Of course jeafl, a voucher system would feel rather awkward for a guy like you. :D

Being arthritic (so typing is difficult) and pressed for time (so a proper edit was impossible) has nothing to do with vouchers.

Quote from spect8or:

'Urban' school populations conist to a very large degree of precisely such unteachables.

So to do suburban school populations that attend Christian academies.

Quote from spect8or:

Poor white children routinely outperform black children from well to do households. This baffles liberals, but the reason is that whites simply have more inherent potential. [/B]

What bigot told you this?

In my part of Florida we have several private schools that have an all-black faculty and all-black student body. However, I know of no private school that is all white as far as Christian academies go, although the more expensive private schools may be mostly, if not all, white.

Newspapers report on it from time to time. So if the NYT, which is where I recall leading the last such report from, 'bigoted', than your issue is with them, not me.

I've never seen such a claim (apart from that book that was published a while ago comparing Asians, whites and blacks); I doubt that it can be backed up with any kind of empirical evidence.

Quote from Pabst:

Meaningless.

My personal experience is a prime example.

I grew up in a diverse Chicago neighborhood with poor schools. I commuted 13 miles each way to a Catholic high school on suburban Chicago's North Shore. The Jesuit school I attended, while excellent, was not quite as good as the public high school in the same district (New Trier). New Trier spent about 3x more per student than my private school. However my high school was leaps and bounds better than any public school in the City of Chicago. So across the board comparisons lack real life applicability.

School choice advocates have never argued that suburban public high schools fail to deliver a quality, albeit expensive, product. Rather we argue that inner city schools provide a horseshit product that also happens to be expensive. The worry is not whether rich suburban kid's are learning to read. They are. The problem is the scholastic apartheid taking place in our nations inner city public schools. So the study worth reading would be a comparison between urban public institutions and the Catholic schools also in those areas.
