It is no secret that the states that tend to be the most conservative are the ones who receive more from the federal government than they put in.
And one of the reasons is because of these agricultual welfare programs.
Simply put, American farmers in general cannot compete in the world markets, so the government helps keep them in business.
Ironically, rural areas tend to be conservative, and conservatives are the ones most likely to rail about encroaching government control, socialism, and welfare.

A large number of farmers in the District of Columbia are there?
They receive THREE times the ratio of aid vs taxes paid as the number two on the list, N. Dakota.
And number three on the list of aid vs taxes paid is a blue state, New Mexico.
But that's enough cherry picking statistics for me in one day.
BTW, I'm all for reduced or complete elimination of farm subsidies. In fact given the above logic I'm surprised the DNC hasn't proposed just such a strategy so as to eliminate the opposition/red states altogether.
Rural, white farming areas in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin have a long history of left wing advocacy. In the 1930's there were all kinds of political parties like the Socialist Farmers etc.
