1)Not certain what you mean but each party comes out with a "platform" every so often.

2)For the most part it's not taught anymore. Not at home and not in schools.
3)Personally I think much of it has to do with the "team" syndrome.
Most (not all) will adopt the party that agrees with their one or two most important issues. Then accept, put up with or even out right support whatever else comes with that parties platform.

It's civil until characters like Lucrum or peilthetraveler (and a lot of others) come on and they simply cannot tolerate someone else's different opinion.

Just ordered the book, should be an interesting read, have you read it? I just hope it doesnt come at me with one side being all prejudice religion and the other being the antithesis of that, as i know that is not the reason why the sides have divided. I agree btw in terms of the markets, 99% of successful traders i know are not wasting their time in a hard line stance on one side OR the other, they are capable of critical thought.

The same issues which are clearly grey BOTH choose to go black and white, 99% of the time. I want to find out where this bias came from and am looking foreword to Monty's book
You will enjoy the read if you are interested in this subject or politics in general. I read this several years ago for a college course titled, America: Who Voted? (I was a political science major). Anyway, it is a slightly academic book but it is written in simple language. You can also skip over sections or issues you are not that interested about. The framework, as I noted in the earlier post, is that of the Strict Father (conservative) and Nurturant Mother (liberal). Once you start reading it you will understand better.
