Recommend this book to all programmers

Strongly recommended:

"Brownfield Application Development in .NET"

This book has .NET in the title, but it applies to all modern programming of this sort, imo.

Most professional programmers know this stuff already. If you don't, you will just be surprised when you get a job and have to learn it all at once.

looks too IT(ish)...takes all the fun out of programming. but should be good if you inherit a TPS reporting app.

is there a book that prevents unchallenged programmers from creating a system/application that is just technical masturbation a la rube goldberg
