Recent Visitors - Do people like that?

i started another thread about this, didn't see this topic already.

i know that other forum sites (classmates? linkedin? i forget which ones) have an option like:

"do not display when you've viewed another person's profile".

for example: i got a friend invite from someone on here. they have 2 posts. why would i want to 'friend' them? i'd prefer to check out their profile (to see they have 2 posts) without them knowing.

what i'll just do in the future is either not check out their profile, or check it out from another browser that i'm not logged in to.
 
This is just an interim upgrade believe it or not. We are moving to a whole new system within the next week or so, and that system won't show who visited a profile page. But I needed to do this upgrade first in order to move to the new setup. It's kinda confusing, so all I can ask is that you trust the captain of this ship :D
 
FWIW, thousands of people read my posts, so what do I care whether or not they visit my profile page? If one doesn't want people to know anything about him, don't fill it out. If one fills it out anyway, why would one object to people looking at it? That's sort of the point.

As for the "friend" thing, I'd prefer it be deleted. What purpose does it serve? If one wanted to send a PM to everyone on his list and could do so, it might be useful. Otherwise, it's just a measure of popularity that nobody sees anyway.

And please don't clutter up every page with all the social media buttons. If the sponsors are happy with the traffic counts, please just leave well enough alone.

You don't understand the privacy concern this thread is trying to address. It has nothing to do with the info you fill out in your profile. The problem is when someone visits your profile he is added to the list of Recent Visitors to your profile.

Now imagine if Facebook did the same thing.

Again, so what? Every post you've ever made has "visitors". What difference does it make whether or not you know who they are? What difference does it make whether or not they know you're reading their posts? Everybody is anonymous.

FXforex, I think the part of the equation you are missing is that you are not posting as yourself... you're posting under an alias. So in essence, you're trying to protect the privacy of an alias.... which doesn't make a lot of sense. Your facebook analogy doesn't really apply because on Facebook most people are posting as themselves, not an alias, so there's a direct connection. So the fact that "FXforex" just visited my profile is meaningless because nobody knows who FXforex is anyway.

Yes .... But the "Recent Visitors" feature is another reason not to post as yourself. Also if someone who uses their real name becomes aware that their viewing habits are being publicly displayed on ET they might not like it. Privacy on the internet is a big thing these days.
 
Unless one has been delivered in the backwoods by an anonymous midwife, has never applied for a driver's license, and has never filed a tax return, the privacy ship has sailed. Those who are concerned about this are decades too late.
