Actually, shorting and short interest is very murky, even for broker dealers. It's pretty incredible how shady that business is.The brokers should have real-time data, and I suspect their own trading desk is taking advantage of it...

Ok I see. Along those lines... Say I was a director (or even an employee I guess) in a company with an option to purchase and exercise shares at a later date and the stock is skyrocketing today but I think its going to drop for whatever reason. Is it legal for me to short the stock and basically put myself in a box position to protect my gains?I was not referring to a MM hedging their book. you buy 100 50D puts and they sell stock, as that order flow is still bearish and needs to be closed at some point. I was referring a long to a convertible bond, Warrant, preferred or stock swap from a take over and other situations where the short in the stock is not a bearish bet but a hedge to lock in a trade.
I'm not sure. I used to trade convertible warrants. They are priced like options but hard to borrow, so they generally trade with a premium. After I bought a block of warrants, I'd hedge them with shorting the stock. It is not only for insiders.Ok I see. Along those lines... Is there a value in the real-time short interest data? If so, who provides such data? I can only find real-time short interest forecast (a paid service).
Since the brokers are facilitating the borrowing, I would assume they would know, especially the big ones serving hedgefundsActually, shorting and short interest is very murky, even for broker dealers. It's pretty incredible how shady that business is.
https://www.prnewswire.com/news-rel...ics-to-nasdaq-listed-companies-300661893.htmlWhat company is providing real-time short interest forecasts? I currently get a daily drop from https://ihsmarkit.com/products/securities-finance.html So yeah I've found value in T-1 short interest data and so definitely would with real time data but not aware of anyone providing it
