Re-thinking "Discipline"

Disagree.

"Discipline" is not subjective. It's like honesty. Either you have it or you don't. And like honesty, discipline is not absolute. IOW... none of us traders are "100% disciplined", though over time we strive to be better at it. Just like none of us are 100% honest.... like when your wife asks, "do these jeans make me look fat"? You respond (ignoring the muffin top), "no dear".
%%
One lady said to her friend ''no, those dont make you look fat, you are fat'':D BUT since i'm not a female, +disciplined enough not to pretend; or as my banker dad said ''dont tell all you know''

One of the most socially destructive things of the last half-century is the insidious twisting of "discipline" from something admirable and good, to something evil, bad, unfair, knee-jerk, unproportioned and sapping of any joyeux de vivre.

Seriously -- as a species, this sucks.

Think of Discipline as this, every morning you will wake up and be like the Blues Brothers eating once in their lives at a fine restaurant since you can't control your money.

Yes, it be fun and charming then when you shit canned your last buck....

So, for those reading this thread, what behavior do you know you need to do, although uncomfortable, in order to be disciplined? By the way, this was my 500th post!

There is only ONE "behavior" to being disciplined.... doing what you know you should even though it's not comfortable.... and even though you can rationalize not doing so for whatever reason.

Follow and execute your trades for your own defined reasons.

But discipline extends to more than just execution... like paying attention.

Agree that discipline is not subjective. But usually just saying "I need to be more disciplined in my trading" isn't that helpful so that is why I focus on the habits and behaviors that result in more discipline rather than just focusing on "being disciplined."

What one ought to be saying is "I need to be more disciplined in following my trading plan." Without a plan, there's nothing to be disciplined about. With a plan, following it brings rewards, and it is those rewards that make being disciplined pleasurable.

The problem is that the word "discipline" sounds and feels negative -- meaning that you "have" to do things you don't want to do.

[I'm not much into boots, myself, to be honest, but] I instinctively look at it (in a trading context, anyway) the opposite way round: as having to not do things that you might want to do (e.g. taking trades that don't really "qualify" etc. etc.).

Interesting discussion, though ...
