In North Carolina we are once again seeing in January a classic example of the difference in results between schools mandating masks and schools not using masks.
School systems such as Wake in North Carolina mandate masks be used. The Wake County school system with 160,000+ students currently has no schools closed due to Covid. Yes, there are staffing pressures due to teachers and others being out with Omicron.. and yes, there are students who are out due to Omicron. However not a single school has reached the level of requiring to shut down and going remote.
This situation in very different in counties such as Harnett which don't require masks. Nearly all the schools in Harnett are being shut down this week and going remote due to being overrun with Covid in a maskless environment.
In North Carolina - the legislature passed a law that only individual schools can go remote due to Covid, not entire school systems. However having nearly every single school in a maskless school system shut-down for in-person learning is effectively the same as shutting down the entire school system. Certainly this is not good for the education of children. If they had only required masks this could have been avoided.
