Re-opening Schools in the era of COVID

Many school districts in the N.C. (such as Wake County) are holding in-person K-12 summer school sessions to help students who are behind since a portion of the year was remote. The entire program is voluntary. Masks and social distancing will be required in the schools.
It is being funded with a combination of federal, state, and local money. The teachers are being paid a very good rate plus a bonus for teaching in summer school.
It will be interesting to see the percentage of families on a standard school schedule (as opposed to year round) which take advantage of this program.

Would be interested in hearing if other states/localities are doing something similar.
As would I. Anything that is done in support of children I am a fan of, even if I question the motivation of it.
I will mention in North Carolina both Democrats and Republicans in the legislature, etc. supported having counties driving holding summer schools and providing funding. There appears to be broad support on both sides of the political aisle for this in N.C.
That doesn't mean the reason for the support is the same.
True... In North Carolina the Republican majority legislature generally believes that COVID is fake & a minor flu. They want kids in school on-site to make their point that COVID is not a problem. They want an end to remote schooling to score political points.
The governor and fellow Democrats generally support more money for public education in North Carolina (while Republicans have tried to reduce public education funding for over a decade while supporting taxpayer money going to private schools). Democrats view this as part of their platform to support more money for public education. To Democrats, voluntary summer school is just delivering on their platform for more education funding and they plan to use summer school as an example in upcoming campaigns.
Operational funding for K-12 education (teacher's salaries, etc.) is done at the state level in North Carolina -- not at a local school district level.
Of course, this is your interpretation. More likely they just understand that COVID poses little risk to children and the detriment of isolating them during crucial stages of their development is a hell of a lot worse.
Again, possible, but also possible that democrats increasingly realize that kids need massive support programs to catch up on missed opportunity for the last year and a half.
Just what we need... an entire state not following CDC guidance that unvaccinated students in crowded schools must wear masks.
