Re-opening Schools in the era of COVID

I said it before and have been proven right again..President has shit to do with opening schools. Decision is made by BoE and local government.

Dont be fooled by headlines...

Actually the Federal government has the following to do with school openings:
  • The federal government in the U.S. establishes the standards via the CDC for safe school openings.
  • The federal government provides funding for PPE, equipment (HVAC) and other material to enable school re-openings.
  • The federal education department can withhold other funding for school systems that do not follow guidelines (even if this is unlikely - it provides a possible enforcement hammer)
Of course the local and county school boards in states make the final decisions on re-opening schools and how to do. If they decide to re-open their schools in a manner not following federal guidelines then they open themselves up for protests, unwanted media attention, and possible legal action from parents & teachers.

With absolutely zero power. Florida is a right-to-work state. This is an important clarification. When the teachers threatened to not go back, DeSantis basically told them to go F themselves and he'd replace them. Try that in, say, Chicago or New York. Watch what happens.

Yet Florida is an example of one of the many states where teachers have unions and students are back in classrooms.

Again, because the union has no power. In states where they do, school doesn't go back (generally). Thus, when the union can make/control the decision, they do.

Thus, it's all about the unions.
 
Let's take a look at a map of states which have students in the classroom currently.... Oh wait nearly all the states including ones with unions currently have some students in the classroom.
