Re-opening Schools in the era of COVID

This is the problem I have with the teacher's position, which really is not the average teacher position but the union. If teachers are vaccinated and they still do hybrid with spread out class sizes and social distancing and mask rules, the risk is reduced down to condom levels....

I think teachers are upset about all the extra work they had to undertake for the virtual shift (quite understandable) without any increase in benefits, pay or gratitude (really understandable) but this stand they are taking now is certainly losing my support. EDIT: But then I look into it and realize it is mostly the union and not the teachers I speak with. I love all the teachers I speak with and eavesdropping on my son I heard his math teacher with her small children in the background. Imagine having to teach at home and your own kids also at home and juggling both. IMpossible.

Teachers in Fairfax County, the largest school system in Virginia, demanded vaccinations before reopening schools to in-person learning. Many teachers received their first dose, yet the system still refuses to reopen. That has prompted some to question whether those teachers should have been bumped to the front of the line!

For months now, teachers unions have been moving the goal posts, using students as bargaining chips, and inventing exaggerated safety concerns. We should come together to demand that they put children first. That is, after all, their job.

I have family in this district and they were going back January 26th and now moved it to first week of March. The intent was to give more time for the teacher's to get vaccinated and today there is BoE meeting to outline plan to get back beginning of March. Vaccinations already started.

If they complain about march 1st start date then we know it is smelling like bullshit. Every private school has gone hybrid in that area with small incidence and switched to virtual for a few weeks and then went back. My family's kids have great virtual teachers putting in a lot of effort. I do not think it is really them but the unions stomping their feet.

Seeing that schools are not safe until all the kids are vaccinated they have a very valid point.

The only way to maintain social distancing in schools is to use a hybrid model with only 1/2 or 1/3 of the kids in the building at once. Likewise all the other safety measures (masks, etc.) still need to be in place. Failure to do this simply means that children are spreading COVID to one another and bringing it home to their households.

Many European countries were very successful at holding in-building classes with social distancing, hybrid-learning, and safety measures. The U.S. should learn from their example. Including the reality that if the prevalence of COVID in the local community is not low then it is not safe to hold school.

Your source shows cases that students and "staff" have in COVID. What it doesn't, what it CAN'T possibly know is where those people actually contracted the virus. So you have a number of students and staff that have COVID. And this is supposed to tell us...what, exactly? That students get sick? That adults working in school catch COVID? This is news?

Let's do this AGAIN. Lets see what risk children have from COVID. From Feb 1, state of Florida report for number of people - by age bracket - for cases, hospitalizations and deaths, shall we? Let's keep in mind there are 2.7 Million kids who go to K-12 schools in Florida. Google that if you don't believe me.

Huh. So lets include ALL children under 24, not just K-12 (this should add more to the numerator, helping your cause). There have been a total of 44 deaths IN TOTAL from the beginning of the crisis. In the last YEAR.

Let's do some simple math, you're always bragging about how you love to do math.

44 deaths / 2.7 MILLION school kids. Nevermind that most of those deaths are probably over 18 (see the demographic).

That comes to .00001629 in terms of a risk rate. And because of these 44 deaths, of which most were probably above 18, you want to push to keep 2.7 MILLION kids from learning properly. From sports. From social interaction.

You're a ghoul, that's what you are.

Now. If you had ANY DATA showing the mortality rate of staff that caught the virus at school, and this imaginary data showed that these staff were more at risk, then you might have a case. But you have nothing. Nada. Zilch. ZIPPO.
