Re-opening Schools in the era of COVID

Your kid is much more likely to be kidnapped or abducted than they are to die from Covid, and by quite a large margin. An astronomically larger margin. Why isn't that number being scrolled across the screen day and night? Why aren't we having a national conversation about that? After all, it's all about the safety of the children, isn't it?

Onnnnce again forgetting that all of us, children included, can be infected as well as, wait for it .... infect someone else.

What is so hard about remembering this simple fact?

And oh BTW ChinaBeer ignores the fact that most of those other countries reopening their schools have mainly got their act together. Unlike this country where stats of whatever flavor are looked at just keep going up, up, up.

Nowadays though it is so "unfashionable" to emulate other countries - with rampant nationalism taking hold on the right wingnutty side of things. That used to be so lefty doing the Euro thing.

Come on man ..the risk is low, but 0 is bullshit. The question is are you willing to risk that you don't have that 1 in a million kid with an underlying condition you don't know about that will die. Some will, some won't.

Just as a follow-up, the Wake County school system in North Carolina decided to start the fall semester online only in a school board meeting this week. The families of 50% of the children have already elected to select the online academy education and not go into school.

Originally the school system was going to open under "Plan B" which would rotate the students each week and have 1/3 of them in schools any given week to allow for social distancing. Wake County also allowed parents to select to do an online academy for all of fall semester (and opt out of going into school).

I believe that after the school board saw 50% of the families select the on-line academy (enrollment is still open) that they decided the best option was to make all students online to start the year.

There is no defined date yet when the students would stop online only learning ("Plan C") and move back to school (with weekly rotations) with social distancing ("Plan B").

I cannot push the teachers to do what they do not feel comfortable doing so will go with it and hope it is only first semester for 100% virtual...

Risk to children is a statistical zero. Risk to teachers is less than one percent, unless they're over 65, morbidly obese, have serious health problems. No reason to close the schools. Risk will be exactly the same in 6 months, a year, ten years. There will always be some bug floating around and the exact same groups will always be at risk. Purely a political move to close schools.

Yes because otherwise it would be political to tell them they must risk their health ... just to keep a jackass in office.

One the risk of my (healthy person in early 40s) dying from Covid is much higher than the flu conditioned on my being infected in the first place.

Two the risk of having longer term complications from Covid are higher than the flu conditioned on my being infected.

Three, the likelihood of my being infected by Covid is higher than the flu largely because people can transmit the virus without knowing they have it.

anyone who understands conditional probabilities understands that comparing this to the flu is not apt.
