As you notice DDR is taking over from that and Rambus is a joke with only P4's using it.

Win2K is also a ram hog and is the most memory intensive Operating system. BUT!! it is defintely the most STABLE without a doubt

Multiple monitors is not a ram issue. That is the Video card's problem. Notice how the vid cards are using DDR ram now?
hmmm.... no sdram. Is this another sign that sdram is on it's way out?

Sdram also runs at say 150mhz overclocked with say crucial chips where DDR can run at 233mhz as standard or something like that and Rambus? Well lets just say 800 and leave it at that.

But to get back to the question you asked.
It all depends on what you are running and how mem intensive it is.

I hope you are talking _WITHIN_ the Microsoft choices, as otherwise it would not even be worth a response if you include just about any flavor of Unix.

I've heard this from two different guys that build computers. That's enough for me to believe. By the way, the two guys don't know each other.

It is also well known that Rambus memory is faster than DDR.

even with DDR's 333mhz chipsets it doesn't come close to Rambus's 800 mhz chips

I happen to prefer RAMBUS for one reason - I use dual P4 Xeon processors, and as far as I know, DDR ram is not compatible with the Xeons.

That link supports what i said. Even if DDR was to come close to Rambus it doesn't have the stability anyways.

Doesn't matter how fast your CPU is, if your Ram can't keep up with your FSB (Front Side Bus Speed) then you will always be limited in that way. DDR - 333mhz, Rambus - 800mhz
 
That's exactly what I wanted to get at as well. When the 3gig P4s come out, DDR is not going to be fast enough to make it worth your time to upgrade to a processor that fast. That is why intel is not dropping support for RDRAM altogether. You'll still be able to get a P4 that supports RDRAM.

For my purposes, involving intensive derivatives pricing calculations, I need a computer that is fast as hell an inexpensive enough so that I can put a few processors on the back burner, doing my quant stuff for me. So I'm most probably going to stick with RDRAM
