President Biden will share a sneak peek at the first set of scientific images from the James Webb Space Telescope at a White House event beginning Monday at 5 p.m., according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
The image is expected to be a so-called deep-field image showing thousands of galaxies in a galaxy cluster known to astronomers as SMACS 0723.
"This field will be one of the deepest ever taken," providing a glimpse of some of the oldest and most distant cosmic structures ever observed, said Kevin Hainline, a University of Arizona astronomer and a mission scientist working on the primary camera of the $10 billion, truck-size telescope. Gravity from large galaxies in the foreground of the field magnifies light from more distant objects, he said, letting astronomers view fainter, extremely distant galaxies " that stretch back to the beginning of time."
