I think that work is healthy, and would like to work way past retirement age.
It becomes a problem when it eats up too much time; when people become "workaholics," or work starts to affect one's health.
My vision for "escape from the rat race" was always a reasonable job, where I work 40 hours per week, without commute.
(Note: when I say "40 hours per week," I really mean 40 hours per week, not the reality that 40 hours of billable time is 60+ hours of work + commute.)
I think that this is a good place to be in life. No work? Idle time is the Devil's playground. Too much work? Lead to the grave.
The only problem is that I've never been able to find a job that has that middle ground. Maybe the only way is to work for yourself?
There was a hospice nurse who practiced for 25 plus years. She put a book out about the number one regrets people had throughout their lifetime. She would ask her patients. The number one regret if I remember correctly numero uno was “I wish I hadn’t worked so much” . People get on the hamster wheel and never get off.
edit sorry it was number 2
