Chuck Conners was pro baseballer before acting. Johnny Crawford was a huge baseball fan and the affection between the two was genuine.

Johnny would bring a baseball, a bat, and gloves to the set to try to get games going. They would try to get Chuck to play when he had time. Although, Johnny said that when Chuck went to bat, the ball usually disappeared somewhere far away.
