I remember my Dad saying his worst voyage was in a little Destroyer off the Atlantic coast.

Rough weather and everybody was getting knocked around and sea sick.

I was in the North Pacific circa 1988 on this 350 ft. destroyer:

We were in 30 foot seas. It was so rough the O-1 level (that's the level just above the main deck for you land lubbers) was cracked so severely it could not be repaired. The ship was decommed in 1991.

Whoa! You know most of us can't even imagine how rough that was.

If you ever get a chance to go on board a WW2 submarine do it. Those dudes were on a separate page. I get claustraphobic in very small spaces, my head would have exploded.

I get claustraphobic in the dentist's chair. Even that battleship had very tight quarters by my standards.

My stupid brother was very smart and joined the Navy during Viet Nam. He was a medic in SD during most of that time. The worst part of the war for him was giving sponge baths.

I had pretty low lottery number for the draft. If I got drafted I was going in the Navy. I should of went anyways, I would probably be an admiral. I wasn't good with authority but if one person would have told me I could boss other people around I would hae jumped at the chance. I always thought I'd just be a lumper or something.

Admiral Nutmeg. The greatest military mind in history. And he told really good jokes, too.
