Ok, a topic that I DO know about. I have been professionally handicapping (thoroughbreds) for ten plus years now. I have been profitable for the last eight of them. I am in the fifth year of managing a thoroughbred handicapping fund for several of my associates. I have written two books on the subject and I am currently developing personal software to automate the handicapping venture.
While I have decided not to sell the books or the software, I can give you a couple of valid tips. First, since the favorites only win 1/3 of the races every year (for the past twenty years) you should concentrate on the other charges for your value. Combine this with your understanding of dutching and you can really improve your chances.
Use the racetime odds of 5/2 through 6-1 as your base for a winner. I won't go into why, but you will find more than your share of winners there.
Now as for exactas, use this breakdown for your wagering:
The first number is for the odds of the horse you like as the winner. The second number is the lowest odds horse to pair him with and the third number is the upper range. So if you like a 7-2 race time odds horse as a winner, pair him with horses with odds of 9-2 thru 15-1 from the morning line. For a $1 ticket, you should have an average exacta cost of $6 to $7 dollars. But the payout will definitely be worth it. If you are not too sure about your winning stead, then put together a quinella ticket the same way.
