The name of the religion is Judaism, not Jew and this is where your absurd logic is falling apart. Jew is more like an ethnicity. If your mother is jewish, you are a Jew and you don't need to practice Judaism to remain a jew. If you are not born to a Jewish mother, you can convert to Judaism and become a Jew.

You can write a dissertation on how illogical you think it is and it won't change the fact that this is what it means to be a jew and this is how the jews identify themselves as a group.
