Question for legal experts regarding speech rights

I know there are a few legal experts lurking on the board.

A friend has been (indirectly through his ISP provider) subpoenaed from some company he discussed (obviously in a negative light, I assume) on a forum, and is looking for legal advice.

Any personal experience in this area is appreciated.

Only if he is located in Britain where where the person charged with libel has to prove his statements. In the US, with freedom of speech, you can get away with pretty much anything as evidenced by your favorite TV or radio talk show hosts.

How often have you seen a subpoena that wasn't issued by a court or the government?
