QFeed subscription

BSAM - update the ContinuumClient.INI file in your QCharts directory to read like this:

This locks the sequence of the server search and doesn't change it based on their pinging algorithm.

They were chattering about the Boston datafeed upgrade on the network status page when the upgrade was completed a month or two ago.


 
Arch - I tried the latest version available in December 2000 - that is 1.3
The 2 week trial period is included when you sign up with RQ. You can suspend your subscription after the trial by simply sending an email to their customer service. The program notifies you automatically when the trial period is over.

What I liked with RQ was the ability to scan custom watchlist of stocks for certain technical conditions to be met in RT.
That's not comparable with Qcharts Alert system ( which is, btw, the same in RQ )
The look and feel of RQ is also very similar to Qcharts and currently, it works only with Qfeed. So you need a subscription with Qcharts / Qfeed to use RQ.

A very simple example for technical RT scans :

You setup a watchlist of , say, 40 stocks you're following on a regular basis + some of the major indexes.

Now you want an alert for any of these stocks / indexes if following conditions are met :

5 period EMA crosses up through 8 period MA on a 30 minute chartintervall. At the same time, Stochastics must cross up through 20.

Indipendent from the chartintervall you are currently using for your open charts, RQ monitors your watchlist in RT for any stock / index meeting these conditions.

Of course, you can use more sophisticated scans or add more conditions ( i.e. volume ) to be met.

RQ offers a lot of pre-build scans based on technical indicators / patterns. Just select the scan you like and apply it your watchlist.
You can even use several different scans on the same watchlist at the same time.

It's a bit like using a TA screener for EOD , but on RT basis.
If you're good enough in TA and the programming language ( easy ) you can setup your custom scans.

Charting :
Via so called "plugin's" RQ draws automatically Fib's, last days and current days OHLC, colour-coded MACD etc.

You can even build your custom colour-studies based on various indicators.

A nice charting feature is the symbol / intervall bar on the charts. It's used to assign tabs for all symbols in your watchlist to one chart. So you can switch between charts of symbols very quickly.You can also assign various time-frames to the charts by using the intervall bar.

Of course, all these bells & whistles need more ressources than Qcharts. But I used RQ on a PII 400Mhz, 256MB Ram PC with ISDN Internet-connection ( no proxy-server) and had no problems to run 6 or seven RT scans simultaneously on 50 - 60 stocks & indexes. The only problems I had were related to Qfeed !

As I said at an earlier occasion :
for the TA oriented, trader, RQ is IMO one of the best solutions on the market for RT software. The pricing is very fair, considering all the features you get.
If one needs only quotes, good charts & drawing tools, basic indicators and simple alert features, Qcharts is certainly next best.

However, the biggest problem for both programs is reliability and stability of the RT quote-feed.
And that is currently the major drawback for both, since they have to rely on Qfeed. It's a pitty.

That's why I said, RQ + a reliable datafeed would be my personal ultimate choice for RT software.





 
Privateer - I haven't had a chance to say this yet but you have provided invaluable information on a wide range of topics. I'm sure I'm not the only one who sincerely appreciates your efforts. Anyways - thank you very much.
 
Wirelessbull - thanks a lot. I try to help as far as my limited time and level of experience allows it. Still learning every day.

But you should check out the posts of Archangel - he's a real genius IMHO - and he has far more insight on software development than I have. I am just a user, trying to find the best application for any given task ( that's not only related to trading )

I've learned ( and still learn ) a lot from Arch and many other experienced traders here on ET.
