Q3 Earnings - July 17 to 24

Third-quarter earnings is just around the corner and I'm going to look into potential trades for July 17 to 24. Below I have compiled a short list and will be concentrating on the ones in red.

  • GOOGL July 17
  • CMG July 21
  • NFLX July 21
  • AAPL July 22
  • FB July 23
  • AMZN July 24
  • TWTR July 21-25?
  • TSLA Aug 4-8?
  • PCLN Aug 4-8?


I'm only interested in OTM calls and I do have one trade in mind.

Buy 1-2 strike OTM QQQ July 25 calls on Thursday July 17 and hold for one week. There is a few high profile stocks reporting during that time that might boost the market.

Big week coming up, if I enter any trades I will post them right away. As usual I encourage comments and participation from the peanut gallery, but try and keep it earnings/option related.

Potential trade for Tuesday July 15.

  • YHOO
  • Earnings Tuesday July 15.
  • Owns 22.6% (BABA) Alibaba. IPO coming up.
  • Buy 1-2 strike OTM July 19 calls.

Sold 3 Jul18 35.5P @.82 Covered stock at 35.51. Diagonal backspread - classic earnings play. But generally, the skew is meaningless.

Long 5 Jul25 34.5P
Short 3 Jul18 35.5P

Net debit .57 (net of costs) with loss on stock.

FWIW, let the rest of the AAPL expire worthless and managed about a $30 net profit. Hated the trade from the start.

Don't like this trade either. The numbers weren't there. Once again, I'll try to squeeze out some profit.

This gets old fast.
 
Going Bonzo on the trade. Sold 2 Aug. monthlies for 1.52, trying to get the other shorts back. Got 'em for .71 +33 net of costs.

Reverse diag. backspread now.
