You really think that? Seems to me he took advantage of an opportunity created by years of the most buffoonish foreign policy we've had in some time (Hillary, followed by Kerry. Fucking bad jokes. Then we have the liar Rice. And so on). I don't recall Putin begging us not to bomb. I do recall him making subtle threats, perhaps through his friends in Iran and other groups like Hezbollah. He also sent his own ships, including marines, to the region.
Of course, to many on the left, this whole series of events was a planned, brilliant strategy on the part of the administration. Of course, anyone who seriously believes that...
The real bottom line is Obama stepped in his own shit and Putin threw him a lifeline while making himself look like the peacemaker, and saving his ally Assad's ass (and his chemical weapons) in the process.
