The US wants probably wants Turkey to play a stronger role in Central Asia. This is the beginning of a planned realignment. Putin has to decide whether he'd rather have scattered terrorists or a Turkish hegemony on his southern border. Probably the former, but not sure Russia's interests are enough to risk a broader war.
