The moment Putin blundered in he changed the entire conflict to a classic canonical model which is United States + Muhajadeen (ISIS lol) against USSR (well.. russia as surrogate lol) + USSR Satellite State (Syria).
Even though Obama is taking a beating for saying dumb stuff the administration is probably vastly relieved because this model of conflict is very well known to the USA and almost comforting compared to the open-loop unpredictability and chaos that preceded russian presence in the region.

The US wants probably wants Turkey to play a stronger role in Central Asia. This is the beginning of a planned realignment. Putin has to decide whether he'd rather have scattered terrorists or a Turkish hegemony on his southern border. Probably the former, but not sure Russia's interests are enough to risk a broader war.
Dangerous to push the Russian bear, though, because their relative inferiority with respect to the West in conventional weapons makes them more likely to use tactical nukes when cornered.

"The US wants"? Who is the US? Who speaks for us the US? The US is confused and divided, led by our leader who is also confused and divided.
not sure how divided Obama is... but at this stage he only speaks for a small portion of the country. imo. I believe the vast majority of us have learned not to trust establishment politicians on the the "right" or the "left"... and therefore prefer we seal the borders and stay the hell out of as many conflicts as possible.
I sense we all cringe when obama supports the mussies and moderate terrorists or Clinton or McCain or Rubio or Bush and all the other neo con hawks talk about a stronger military going in to more conflicts. They have all proven inept and incompetent... and all they seem to do is destabilize.
