When WNBA star Brittney Griner was convicted on drug charges and sentenced to nine years in a high-security Russian penal colony where she faced extremely harsh and unfair conditions, it was clear to most people that she was a political pawn in a trial that was largely considered a sham. Russia has long denied those allegations, but with Griner now released in exchange for convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, it seems the country is now admitting that her sentence was unfair.
Following the release of Brittney Griner, Russia TV, which is a state-run propoganda media channel, admitted that Russia gave Griner an unfair and uncharacteristically harsh prison sentence so that they could use her as a negotiating tool to secure the release of a high profile Russian prisoner like Viktor Bout.
“How did we manage to do that? Well, because we managed to set up an exchange fund. Because the girl was sentenced to nine years in prison,” a commentator said on Russia TV, according to a translation by Anton Gerashchenko, who is the Advisor to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.
“People used to be sentenced to three years probation for such a crime. In fact, it is an insanely unreasonable term given to Viktor Anatolyevich [Bout] in the U.S. But nine years for a cigarette… that’s never happened before!” the commentator continued.
“Not a cigarette, but drugs,” another commentator said.
“Drugs. Nine years!” the other commentator said. “People don’t get that many years even for murder.”
