Ukraine was pretty much divided politically, this is not uncommon, even USA is divided 50/50 between democrats and republicans. Then came economic offer from EU (more trade, more opportunity etc).
Russian government having seen that Ukraine will accept this offer and maybe one day go into NATO. Putin called Ukraine and offered EVEN BETTER economic deal. Ukraine government accepted Russian deal.
Few demonstrations started in Kiev, half the people in the main city were for European deal, and saw Russian deal as inferior, they started demonstrations. These were legit demonstrations, BUT THEN, the busy bee, the US government saw the opportunity to deal a major blow to Russia's deal. Good old US money came in and demonstrators were filled with ranks of extremists, down right neo nazis and right sector type guys.
They started burning and beating and killing, Senator McCain join them pumping fists into air in city square.
Government was overthrown.
Russians having seen what just happened, knew that they would lose their big ass navy base in Crimea, so they used the largely Russian speaking population of Crimea to quickly get them to vote and separate Crimea and join into Russia.
Eastern Ukrainians who supported ousted government in Kiev saw this as their opportunity to say NO to the new government, and took up arms.
They say the new government was not VOTED IN, but simply busted in, they now want independence and in fact they want to join Russian Federation, but Putin doesn't really want them, they are a mess and too rag tag.
And to prove that I am objective, YES it is true that Russia helps them with weapons. Just like US sends weapons to Syria Rebels, just like US sent weapons to every goddamn place on earth at some point in the last 60 years.
You hate Russia, I get that, Russia is not perfect, what I don't get is why you prefer US government.
US government has shown time and time again that they are in fact far more dangerous than Putin.

Russia is still authoritarian and that involved bashing the gays and Caucasus folks. Alignment with either Russian or European powers is a long term commitment with pros and cons, obviously most ethnic Ukrainians want the latter.

Canada will not be intimidated by Russia's ban on its food imports, Industry Minister James Moore said Thursday, warning that the sanctions will hurt Russian consumers more than Canadians.
"We will certainly look at the impact of these sanctions on the Canadian economy, but they will in no way cause us to have any hesitation in the principled position we've taken in opposing [Russian President] Vladimir Putin's regime," Moore said during a news conference in Montreal.
Russia responded Thursday to fresh sanctions from Canada, the U.S. and other countries with a ban on food imports for a year. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev announced that the ban includes Canada, the U.S. the European Union, Australia, Norway and covers:
Meat.
Fish.
Milk and dairy products.
Fruit and vegetables.
Moore said the sanctions show the importance of expanding free trade, including the Harper government's drive toward a free-trade deal with the European Union.
