It's very funny, because the official main language in Ukraine was changed from Russian to Ukrainian years ago. You either don't know that or, more likely, don't want to admit it. That's actually one of the true reasons for this whole war, because Russians, who always expected to be the upper class in Ukraine, all of sudden became second class citizens in a foreign country while Ukraine developed their own national identity. Russians always considered themselves to be better than Ukrainians, to be the elite in Ukraine by birth right, and the Russian language was a big part of that, but Ukraine began to take their own country back. That's what you call "provoking Russia", that's what the whole "Nazi" propaganda from Putin is about - a country that had enough of Russian domination -, and it's one of the main reasons why Putin and the Russian colonialism intervened, because a "Russian province" exploring their own identity was outrageous and Russia would not allow this to happen.
Freedom is actually the best reason I can think of that is worth to fight and even die for, and always has been in the history of mankind. That's the point Russians don't understand and why Putin will lose. If Russia wants to destroy half of the world, including themselves, because they want to be the Herrenrasse, we have seen that happen before, so be it.
