Putin: A War Criminal

The US doesn't even recognise the Internal Criminal Court but some want to use it to go after Russia.

    • Sen. Lindsey Graham is promoting a resolution in support of charging Russia with war crimes at the ICC.
    • But the US doesn't recognize the court's authority, and Trump even sanctioned it when he was President.
"I think there was an effort by some to hold [former Secretary of Defense Donald] Rumsfeld accountable as a war criminal," said Graham.

He specifically mentioned Israel, the closest ally of the US in the Middle East. The US has often downplayed allegations of war crimes against Israel and opposed ICC probes into such accusations.

Didn't the ICC issue a warrant for GW Bush's arrest over the bombings of civilians in Iraq? US has a long list of bombing civilians directly, like in Vietnam, Japan, Iraq, Syria, etc. Now, aren't those considered war crimes? In war, things happen that normally, does not happen but, the current tit for tat between Russia and Ukraine shows the glaring difference. Russia targets military targets, its missiles get deflected and hits apartments and a handful of Ukrainian civilians end up getting injured or killed. Ukraine in turn, fires rockets or artillery directly, on ethnic Russians in the Luhansk and Donetsk areas with no criticism whatsoever? That is obviously, war crimes. Add to that, Ukrainian military hiding tanks between apartment buildings or storing weapons and ammo in warehouses near residential areas----that would amount to a war crime if one was being honest. The Nazi officers who got arrested and tried in Nuremberg got stiff sentences but, Germany commuted those sentences to a few years tops. Explain that Sherlock for all Germany being outraged at Russia? Just like the FBI and DOJ going after President Donald Trump and trying to nail him on the wall while, Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, the Obamas, the Clintons, etc. go off scot free without even a reprimand, for all they have done?

Sorry smallfil, the ICC never issued an arrest warrant for GW Bush. Nice fantasy you have there.

Nor did the ICC issue arrest warrants for the leaders of the other 40 or so nations in the coalition.

The War Criminal is not going to South Africa.

South Africa says Putin will skip a summit next month because of his ICC arrest warrant

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — Vladimir Putin has agreed not to attend an economic summit in Johannesburg next month after being asked to stay away by host country South Africa, which was facing a major legal quandary over whether to arrest the Russian president on an International Criminal Court warrant.

The August summit brings together Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — a bloc of developing economies known as BRICS. Officials have said that Putin wants to attend the gathering but have been trying to persuade him to stay away to avoid the legal and diplomatic fallout over his international arrest warrant.

On Wednesday, the office of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said Putin will not attend the BRICS summit after a “mutual agreement,” ending months of speculation. South Africa is a signatory to the Rome Statute that established the ICC and would have been obliged it to arrest him.

Although Moscow has dismissed the warrant and Russia doesn’t recognize the authority of the international court, Putin has not traveled to any country that is a signatory to the court’s treaty since he was indicted by the ICC in March for war crimes relating to the abduction of children from Ukraine.

South African authorities had given strong hints that they would have likely not executed the arrest warrant against Putin, but South Africa’s main opposition party has taken the government to court in an attempt to compel it to arrest the Russian leader if he sets foot on South African territory.

Russia will be represented at the BRICS summit by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Ramaphosa’s office said in a statement. All the leaders of the other four countries, including China’s Xi Jinping, will attend the summit, it said.

Ramaphosa has said that any attempt to arrest Putin would have serious consequences for South Africa, including it being viewed by Russia as a “declaration of war.”

“I must highlight, for the sake of transparency, that South Africa has obvious problems with executing a request to arrest and surrender President Putin,” Ramaphosa said in a court affidavit related to the legal case brought by the opposition party.

“Russia has made it clear that arresting its sitting president would be a declaration of war,” Ramaphosa added in the affidavit, which was made public on Tuesday.

However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied that in a conference call with reporters on Wednesday. That call was held before South Africa’s announcement that Putin would not attend the summit.

“No one has indicated anything to anyone,” Peskov said. “In this world, it is absolutely clear to everyone what an attempt to encroach on the head of the Russian state means. So there is no need to explain anything to anyone here.”

Although the Kremlin had not confirmed Putin’s plans to attend the summit, South Africa has claimed he was determined to.

South Africa Deputy President Paul Mashatile said in an interview with a top South African news outlet last week that South Africa had proposed other solutions to the arrest warrant issue, including moving the summit to China or holding a virtual summit where Putin could appear on a screen from Russia.

Russia rejected those ideas and wanted Putin to attend in person, Mashatile said.

And the actual Reality instead of twisted Russian propaganda...

Russia bombs theater where hundreds sought shelter and 'children' was written on grounds
https://www.cnn.com/2022/03/16/europe/ukraine-mariupol-bombing-theater-intl/index.html

A theater where hundreds of people had taken shelter in Mariupol was bombed on Wednesday, according to local authorities, as hundreds of thousands of people remain trapped in the coastal Ukrainian city that has been encircled for weeks by Russian forces.

Mariupol City Council, who shared an image of the destroyed building, said Russian forces had "purposefully and cynically destroyed the Drama Theater in the heart of Mariupol."

"The plane dropped a bomb on a building where hundreds of peaceful Mariupol residents were hiding," it said.

CNN has geolocated the image and confirmed it is of the theater in the southeastern port city. The word "children" was spelled out on two sides of the theater before it was bombed, according to satellite images.

Videos of the aftermath showed a fire raging in the theater's ruins. The number of casualties is unknown, authorities said.

"It is still impossible to estimate the scale of this horrific and inhumane act, because the city continues to shell residential areas," the council wrote on Telegram. "It is known that after the bombing, the central part of the Drama Theater was destroyed, and the entrance to the bomb shelter in the building was destroyed," it added.

New satellite images from Maxar Technologies show that on Monday, the word "children" was spelled out in Russian in two areas outside the theater that was bombed on Wednesday.

The Drama Theater in Mariupol was attacked on Wednesday. The number of casualties is unknown.

Petro Andruishchenko, an adviser to the mayor of Mariupol, described the theater as the largest shelter "in number and size" in the city's center. "More than a thousand people were hiding there" but"the probability of getting there to dismantle the rubble is low due to constant shelling and bombing of the city," he said.

Military strikes also hit a building that houses the Neptune Pool, just over four kilometers (approximately 2.5 miles) from the theater, according to videos shared by a local official. Its authenticity has been confirmed by CNN.

Maxim Kach, a Mariupol city government official, said the building was for civilians, with only women and young children hiding within it and not military personnel.

He said rescue workers were busy trying to get a pregnant woman out from under the rubble. CNN has not been able to verify that information.

Mariupol has been besieged by Russian forces since March 1. After weeks of failed attempts to establish safe civilian evacuation corridors, about 20,000 people managed to leave the city on Tuesday, Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk said.

Officials say its trapped residents have been surviving without electricity, water and food, with people melting snow or dismantling heating systems for a drop to drink.

The relentless bombardment and street fights in the city have restricted movements. The day before, a Ukrainian official accused Russian troops of holding some 400 people captive at Mariupol's Regional Intensive Care Hospital.

"It is impossible to find words that could describe the level of cruelty and cynicism with which the Russian occupiers are destroying the civilian population of the Ukrainian city by the sea. Women, children, and the elderly remain in the enemy's sights. These are completely unarmed peaceful people," the city council said.
"We will never forgive and never forget," it added.

The unfolding humanitarian catastrophe in Mariupol has enraged local officials. "These bastards are trying [to] physically destroy Mariupol and the people of Mariupol, which have been a symbol of our resistance," Pavlo Kyrylenko, head of Donetsk region administration, said on Facebook Wednesday.

He says the "fate is unknown" of the hundreds of people sheltering in the theater "as the entrance to the bomb shelter is blocked by rubble," he said.

"The Russians are already lying, [saying] that the headquarters of the Azov Regiment was there. But they themselves are well aware that there were only civilians," he said.

After Russia bombed a maternity hospital on March 9, its Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov alleged without evidence that the hospital was the ultra-nationalist militia Azov battalion's base and that all patients and nurses had left.

A Russian Ministry of Defense spokesperson later denied in a briefing that Russia had shelled the maternity hospital at all, calling it a "provocation."

Mariupol has been reduced to a battle zone, with the city's deputy mayor telling CNN on Tuesday that Russia has been bombarding the city with missiles, saying that they counted 22 aircraft on Monday "which were bombing our city, and at least 100 bombs."

Residents who fled the city have described conditions there as "unbearable" and "just hell." On Tuesday, shocking drone footage and satellite photos showing rising plumes of thick smoke and destroyed buildings emerged, underscoring the sheer devastation wrought by the Russian bombardment.

As many as 2,500 civilians have died in Mariupol, Ukrainian officials estimate, and hundreds of thousands of people are trapped in the city -- with officials warning those who remain are without electricity, water and heat.

Ukraine to file fifth lawsuit in international courts on Russia's ecocidal crimes
https://news.yahoo.com/ukraine-file-fifth-lawsuit-international-125731641.html?fr=sycsrp_catchall

Ukraine is preparing an ecocide case against Russia, which will be the fifth lawsuit related to war crimes committed by the Russian Federation under consideration in international courts.

Source: The New York Times

Quote: "Currently, four specific acts — genocide, crimes against humanity, aggression and war crimes — are recognized as international crimes. Ukraine would like to add a fifth — ecocide — and it is setting out to build its case against Russia," reports NYT with reference to Maksym Popov, an adviser to the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, who specialises in environmental issues.

"We right now are developing the strategy for the prosecution of environmental war crimes and ecocide," he said.

Details: It is known that part of this case will be the mass death of dolphins that continues in the Black Sea.

Quote: "Dolphins are not only cute creatures. They are keystone creatures for the marine ecosystem. If dolphins are in a bad condition, then the entire ecosystem will be in a bad condition," said Pavlo Holdin, a doctor in zoology who specialises in marine mammal populations at the Ukrainian Scientific Centre of Ecology of the Sea.

Details: According to The New York Times, Pavlo Holdin performed a series of autopsies on the dead dolphins in order to establish the cause of their death.

Quote:"Ukrainian officials say their plight speaks to the savage toll that Russia’s war is taking on marine life and the environment more broadly — something they want to document for prosecution," the newspaper reports.

Background: The first dead animals were found on the Turkish Black Sea coast near the Bosphorus in March, almost immediately after the start of Russia's full-scale attack on Ukraine. Usually, at this time of year, there are not many cases of cetaceans deaths. So scientists immediately took notice.

In April, an atypical mass death of cetaceans began to be noticed in Bulgaria. In previous years, dolphins also died here at this time of year, but now this occurs many times more than usual.

In May, dead dolphins began to be found in Romania and Ukraine.

Most cases were recorded in Sevastopol. Dead animals were also found in Kerch, Feodosia, Odesa and near Mykolaiv. In addition, there are unusual cases when exhausted dolphins swim to the shore, even though they do not look injured or sick.

The peak of deaths occurred in late May and early June. Another, smaller peak occurred in late August.
