One thing you're overlooking about property in US is that it varies a *LOT* by region. You sometimes have 1 region going up while another is going down. The last 3-4 years have been somewhat different for 1 reason: interest rates.
So, I don't believe a real estate value index is of much help. Maybe a regional one? Say California, Texas, Florida, or New York?
I think those may be available.
Also, something that varies a lot but gets little attention are real estate taxes payable monthly/yearly. In some areas they are *huge* but are serious costs of ownership.
Know the tricky rules before getting involved.
