PROMISES, PROMISES: When Obama's promises conflict

Obama, like all of them, is a salesman. In a country so desperate as ours, he had an easy time of it selling everyone's favorite product. Reminds me of a few old sayings.

Hope is the poor man's bread.

Hope is grief's best music

It is the around-the-corner brand of hope that prompts people to action,(2008 election), while the distant hope acts as an opiate,(2012 election)

And most appropriate to Obama:
Hope deceives more men than cunning does

There is nothing so well known as that we should not expect something for nothing - but we all do and call it Hope

He that lives upon hope will die fasting

My next door neighbors have a 1987 Chevy van with 200K miles on it. They are taking their family of 5 across country in that van to visit relatives. They really hope they'll make it.

The Miami Heat brought LeBron James and Chris Bosh on board. Expectations are positive regarding the Heat's chances of making the playoffs.

The van has gone 200k, so it's been maintained, thus it's reasonable for the family to expect it can go another 3k, though they would hope nothing unusual to the van's normal operating conditions, like a particularly hot summer, occurs.

Those players also have measured performance, so it's reasonable to expect them to continue to do so for another season, though they and the team hope that nothing unusual, like an injury, occurs.

Perhaps playing the lottery is a better scenario to use to separate the two ideas.
