Programming for Trading - where to start?

I would like to develop some skills in programming some of my trading ideas so that it can be automated

I did some programming in C++ for a year in University over 10 years ago, so its been a while and I havent kept up to date on the current trends

I would like to know where I can start to learn about programming for trading?

thats very broad. do you mean network programming? threading? event driven? numerical? algorithms? data analysis? GUIs? all the above?

look into R. its free and you can do stuff that requires very little programming. but you still will need to know what you want to use it for.
