Actually, this kind of environmental pressure often rocks societies. Always has, always will. The flavors of the ensuing chaos vary with the culture, of course.

Just wait and see what happens with the West here. The media hasn't been covering it much lately due to events elsewhere in the world, but the situation here has only gotten worse.
I'm waiting with a kind of horrified curiosity. Beef prices will continue to rise, our herds are down from culling, and cattle have a slow replacement rate. Pork supplies will rise, but are doing so from a lower pig population thanks to still more culling. The ongoing drought in CA... All we need is another strong environmental shock, like the broad based crop failures of 2008 (thanks to global cooling--grain hates cooler weather, which is why it grows so well in the tropics!)...
California's in the process of instituting Stage One water rationing which entails heavy fines. Of course they should have gone to Stage One long ago, but . . .
