  • I knew nothing about what happened in Benghazi.
  • I have never known my uncle from Kenya who is in the country illegally and that was arrested and told to leave the country over 20 years ago.
  • And, I have never lived with that uncle. He finally admitted (12-05-2013) that he DID know his uncle and that he DID live with him.
  • If elected I promise not to renew the Patriot Act.
  • If elected I will end the war in Iraq and Afghanistan within the 1st 9 months of my term.
  • I will close Guantanamo within the first 6 months of my term.
  • I will bridge the gap between black and white and between America and other countries.
And the biggest one of all:

I believe we have a winner
 
Guantanamo kind of mystifies me because the President, as CIC, could close that facility with a single verbal order.

So why is Obama unable to fulfill the most basic promise he made during his campaign?

The obvious problem is the disposition of the prisoners. If they are transferred to US soil they have some additional rights that evidently preclude aggressive interrogation (torture). So they keep Gitmo open because it is a rare item, a bit of foreign territory that is not accountable to a foreign government. This simple legal slight-of-hand is the reason that Guantanamo cannot be closed.

What happened to Obama is that the career bureaucrats convinced him that the government needs to be able to extract information from captured islamofascists and that the only place those kinds of efforts can be exerted is at Gitmo. He likely found that out during the first few days of his presidency.

Weak.

Its like this. If you don't have the stones to execute prisoners then you must simply release them. There is nothing in between those two choices that is consistent with our laws and customs.

The righteous thing to do is to issue a single line CIC order closing the facility and ordering the transfer of all prisoners to wherever the US military planned to keep POWs in the event of war. Surely there has always been someplace that the US puts POWS. If Congress tries to block the transfer of prisoners then pile them onto a plane and release them to ISIS. Obama doesn't have the strong will necessary for this and so he is stuck with the status quo and looks weak.
