Food and guns isn't that important. You need computers, cellphones and other communication devices like the internet. Otherwise you won't make it.

If you want to hole up with shotguns & rifles at a self sufficient farm, go ahead. Maybe you will turn out to be Rambo 2.0 and take on armies of criminals. But chances are, as an isolated site that obviously has valuables, you will be a prized target for those who thrive during chaos.

If dislocation occurs to the point the grid goes down, or welfare payments stop, the first thing to happen will be the looting of the urban areas. Concurrently, the city boys will be punked, and the women...abused...while the cops hole up in fortress police stations, ala the King riots in LA and post Katrina New Orleans.
When the food and liquor, in first the urban cores, then the suburbs, go short, the cities will burn, just like LA did, just like Detroit did. Only reason New Orleans wasn't torched is because it was too wet.
Then the scum will migrate out. Odds are they'll be short on ammunition by then, probably hungry, definitely a little footsore. When we first see the smoke from the cities, my neighbor will K-rail the freeway exits nearest us using his crane and backhoe. Anybody wanting to...visit...has a long hike ahead of them.
By day, they'll have to cross the bridges to get here, or brave the coyotes who live in the 40 foot deep run-off ditches. Best be wearing Level IV armor crossing those fields, unless you know the friendly signal. The bridges will be under constant observation. Any trouble signals, and the ready reaction force responds, guys who I...hope...I can keep from slaughtering every refugee passing thru. We're going to need some peasants to work the fields, since fuel will be short. You're welcome to apply, but attitudes get short rations, and on second warning, The Road.
By night, those bridges will be physically blocked, multiple OPs covering each. Not all manned of course, but at least one per chokepoint, no confidence for outsiders which are empty and which are not. Signs will note time of re-opening, and extend a friendly invitation to stay, to those willing to work. All the water friendly passers-thru can drink or carry, gratis. Anybody gets frisky, day or night, RRF responds. If a duece and a half, covering a platoon (3-4 maneuver elements) with twin .50s can't get the job done, you're right, we'll get overrun. Last thing we do in that case will be to pop the propane pigs, there won't be much left for the looters to enjoy after that.
I really don't think the gangbangers can hang with us though. Before they know anyone is around, they'll will come under NVD (PVS 7s and 14s) directed suppressive fires, fixing them in place, at a location of our choosing. Second element flanks, while fixing fires walk across ahead of them, to avoid blue on blue, third element stands by for exploitation, fourth in reserve. You know....SOP.
Survivors get to bury their dead. If you're right about the quantity of attention we'll be getting, our fields ought to be producing pretty well in just a couple years worth of excellent fertilizer.
I doubt we'll ever reclaim the cities. Nothing we want or need there, and too many Pollyanna corpses who cried "This can't be happening" shortly before they charred black and turned to ash.
Course...it may not ever get that rough. Maybe just like Iceland...or Argentina. Iceland be okay for city boys, I guess, if they have some food laid up, but even minimal violence like Argentina will have most folks wishing for a heater and at least a case of ammo if they want to sleep peacefully at night.
Looks like Greece is getting a little...edgy... lately. Wonder which way things will go there? Reason I ask...if it stays copacetic over there, I can probably pick up a couple more pallets of ammo on the cheap.
If SHTF in Greece though, we're gonna see a whole nother round of gun scaredies, and gun haters, panic buying again over here, driving prices back up.
