Thank you. Nobody saying that new vaccine is not going to be 100% solution. Does that mean new coming vaccine is not going to work for close to 100% population, that would make even more pessimistic vision of the future. Can you clear it out?
Vaccines has
never worked for 100% of the population mainly due to the makeup of the population and mutations of the bacteria / virus that typically shows up after a large infection rate in the population. Simply, there's always a mutation which is why the Flu and the Common Cold will never be wiped out.
A prior poster stated 40 - 60%...a vaccine will work. Somewhat true and that's why treatments is a critical aspect until / if a vaccine becomes available.
In my opinion, 40 - 60% is a great success especially is there's safe treatments to manage the current ill and those later infected by mutated versions of the initial outbreak.
Unfortunately...the sad news...Covid-19 is a
Coronavirus.
Most research are involving in developing or finding an existing
"treatment" to help our immune system fight off the worst illnesses after becoming infected without causing other health problems. Other research are solely focus on finding a
vaccine.
For example, a lot of people do not realize that hundreds of thousands use to die from the "common cold". Many do not realize that most cold medicines are not safe for people with high blood pressure or have underlying kidney problems. Simply, common cold plus the wrong type of cold medicine can cause
death.
Regardless, to treatments for the common cold (a coronavirus)...we still do not have a vaccine for the common cold. You can go to most stores and get cold medicine to help keep the infection from becoming deadly. Thus, medicine for the common cold gives our immune system a fighting chance to do its job although for some its still deadly.
Same for the flu...you can go to the store and get flu medicine just in case you're one of the ones that didn't get a vaccine
or had a vaccine that doesn't work against the current mutated version which is why we get flu shots every few years to vaccinate us against a new version of the flu.
Thus, there's a possibility that there will never be a vaccine for the current Covid-19...scary huh !!!
Yet, there will be
approved treatments for Covid-19 that keep people alive and living a normal life even if they have an underlying medical condition while the same treatment will not work for others...they will just die.
Coronavirus is an ugly bug.
That is why
treatments are critical in controlling its infection rate and giving the infected enough time for their immune system to fight back.
Maybe one day within a few years...we can go to the store and buy over-the-counter Covid-19 medicine just like we can do for the flu
or common cold...
Pill, syrup or chewables to treat Covid-19 but I have no faith in a vaccine for Covid-19 just like there's no vaccine for others before it like SARS and MERS...all a type of Coronavirus.
By the way, HIV is a Retrovirus (inserts its RNA into your DNA)...there's still no vaccine for HIV and how many
billions of dollars have been poured into researching / trying to find a vaccine for HIV ???
Yet, there are highly successful
treatments for HIV if caught in its early stages.
Its so darn tough to find something that attacks the RNA of viruses...you'll be attacking your DNA too. Covid-19 has a lot of research now about attacking its RNA transcription...good luck with that too.
