That being said the smart money was/is on never being seriously challenged or seriously sanctioned and some of that is wearing on him a bit. Under Obama, not so much. Trump is unpredictable to even the Americans so Chubby might want to be a little bit more careful even if we know the dance.
Where Kim needs to watch his arse is not necessarily from a military strike. Chubby needs and wants cash and we probably have enough to make him do things that would in fact lower his ability to defend himself. He willl never rid his mind and plans of nukes but for the right amount of cash he will do things that will take him below readiness, and if we withdrew enough forces he would back off some of the short range missiles near Seoul if we sweetened the pot with enough cash. Then if he tries to ramp up again, we take action against him.
I dont mind spending big bucks if there is big verification that it is taking him below readiness even if not total eradication. It is that "re-nuking" phase where Chubby is vulnerable if he does not behave.
We spend big bucks with Iran and then took it up the bo-bo. And no problem finding the money for Chubby- just take it out of the UN budget. The UN's very purpose is to negotiate settlement in trouble spots around the world to maintain peace. Instead, we are the major funder then have to do all the work in areas that are clearly world problems not just American.
In the long run, Chubby's biggest problem is that once the north gets exposure to more western society, particularly, in the form of people who are also korean rather than foreign invaders, it will be like asking a tiger to become a vegetarian after he has just had a big steak.

Had this shitty deal been left in place, Iran would have gotten nuclear weapons just as surely as NK did, and it would have started a nuclear arms race in the region.

Kim could insist that the US also follows its part of the NPT (and that of the other weapon states) which includes to disarm. Trump will not agree to that..... could be interesting meeting
