Cops are suspicious of people smoking because often people who have been drinking will light up a cig to cover the smell.

This is a good point. We should exhume the body to establish whether the suicide girl was drunk.
No heroic true American policeman should take a hit for a suicide by a mentally ill person.
No no no. She should have been shot as soon she was found to be black without signaling her turn. It would have saved the expense of jailing her for three days. Have you seen the whole video? She was obviously crazed to not turn on her signal and to be annoyed when the sacred holy heroic cop told her to put out her cigarette. He was only doing it to protect her health.
This event just reconfirms that blacks are always guilty of something and cops are always right.

Sandra Black was a DISGRACE to legal driving.
NBC5 Investigates has found that – at the time of her death last Friday — she still owed a total of $7,579.00 in court fines resulting from five traffic stops in various Chicago suburbs (including a DUI), and she had been cited several times for her failure to pay those fines.

She was fined $200, which – according to Cook County Court records – has not been paid.
November of 2013 – A report in a suburban newspaper says that Bland was arrested in Naperville; charged on a warrant, and transported to DuPage County Jail. The news report does not say what the warrant was for.
February of 2014 – Bland was stopped by Lombard Police and charged with operating an uninsured motor vehicle and driving with expired license plates. She was convicted in both charges and fined, but by May of 2014 court records show that she still owed $2,769.00 in fines, and the judge ordered that the Illinois Secretary of State be notified of her failure to pay.
March 3, 2014 – Naperville Police cited Bland for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Court records show she was ordered to pay a fine, but was cited twice for failure to pay. In June of 2014 the court ordered that the Illinois Secretary of State be notified, and the docket lists a $1,313.00 balance still due.
March 8, 2014 – Approximately five days after her stop in Naperville, Bland was stopped by police in Lombard and charged with two counts of driving under the influence; speeding 15-20 mph over the speed limit; improper lane usage; disobeying a traffic control signal; failing to signal when changing lanes; driving on a suspended license, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. The court found her guilty of one DUI charge, and all the other charges were dismissed. She received court supervision and was fined, and court records show that she still owes $3,132.00 in this case. (A spokesman with the Illinois Secretary of State’s office says Bland’s driver’s license was automatically suspended for six months – until November of 2014 – as a result of this DUI conviction.)
During that suspension – in May of 2014 – Naperville Police cited Bland for speeding 15-20 mph over the limit. According to the DuPage County court docket, Bland “fail[ed] to comply” in the case in June of 2014 and again in August of 2014, when the court ordered the Illinois Secretary of State to be notified. Records show a $45.00 balance due in this case, though a court spokesman says the actual amount owed is $165.00. The outcome in this case is not clear.

She was a evidently a lousy driver, a scofflaw, a drug user, mentally fragile and had a chip on her shoulder about how black people can be treated in the South.
But there was something in the encounter where the cop didn't see her as a fragile person. He got hot under the collar and saw her as an annoying person. If she was a good looking white girl doing the same thing, I think he would have written the ticket and given her a lecture. If she was a good ole boy I don't think the cop would have picked on the cigarette. Then again, the good ole boy would have put the cigarette out if asked. Because he understands men and cops better. There was a culture and understanding gap between this woman and the cop.
A lot of lessons to be learned by this case. All the recent media stories about abusive cops may lead to reform, but they may also be encouraging people to talk back to cops and follow them around with cell phone cameras.
Put it all together and a lady who was at a fork in the road of her life died instead of becoming more responsible as she settled into her new job.

In all the overwrought commentary about her, I have yet to read any of this background of her criminal record and apparent feeling that she was above the rules that applied to the rest of us.
Multiple traffic violations. Owed thousands in fines. "Self-styled civil rights activist" according to her facebook page. Had an attitude. Incapable of keeping her mouth shut. Yep, that'll pretty much have you in cuffs every time.
What I don't know is why the now concerned family, knowing of her history of depression, didn't post bail? 5K means a lousy 500 cash. She had called her sister from jail. Seems like a family well enough off to come up with 5 hundos. Maybe they felt she needed to learn a lesson. If that's the case the guilt must be unbearable.

Good posts. I think we can all agree that Sandra Bland was a mentally unstable, HIGHLY AGGRESSIVE, "black rights" activist (whatever the heck that means), with a string of driving related CRIMINALITY and unpaid fines.
The roads of the USA are safer without this person. Its a pity she committed suicide. She should have been jailed for her road crimes, unpaid fines and aggression to our police.

The police should be commended for their professionalism in dealing with this criminal.
