Michelle Obama is a Big Fan of Splurging
By Jennifer Burke
Despite the fact that both have been photographed numerous times, especially Barack, stuffing their mouths with what they would tell others is âjunk food,â the media is making a sensation out of the health consciousness of Barack and Michelle Obama. In fact, according to Newsbusters, the Washington Post devoted a prime front page spot to a full 31 paragraph detailed story on how the Obamas have âtransformed the culture inside the White House regarding nutrition and fitness.â You know, because there arenât more important issues for them to report.
Another recent quote by Michelle Obama would immediately have one think that she was referring to extravagant travel or their elaborate parties, both done on the taxpayer dime. But, alas she was notâ¦.shockingly enough. When talking about food and exercise after the White House Easter Egg Roll, she said, âSplurging is the key to life.â
Itâs easy to understand how someone would think she meant travel. After all, she spent more than $7 million on a 3-day side trip jaunt over to Italy. Thatâs just a dent in the tens of millions of dollars that she has spent on trips to Spain, Africa, China, Colorado, Marthaâs Vineyard, and the list goes on and on. Donât forget about that annual 2-week plus lavish vacation to Hawaii for Christmas!
All of these trips, of course, are taken on the taxpayer dime. Simply going home to Chicago doesnât suffice for the Obamas. They have taken full advantage, and I do stress âtaken advantage,â of perks that come with the Oval Office with their numerous, extravagant vacations and parties on what seems like a monthly basis.
But, letâs get back to food. As reported by Yahoo News, Michelle Obama said that splurging is the key to life if you regularly eat right and stay active.
âHow would you appreciate vegetables if you never had chocolate?â she asked. âYou couldnât live without a little chocolate, a little French fries.â
The first lady took questions from children reporters Monday after appearing at the White House Easter Egg Roll. She told the children that if they eat right the majority of the time, then a splurge or snack is not going to hurt them.
âI still splurge when I can, but thatâs why I try to exercise almost every day,â she said.
The first lady said she tries to teach her two daughters balance and healthy meals at home, to offset any ice cream or birthday cake they have while out.
On second thought, maybe to describe Michelle Obamaâs lavish traveling on the taxpayer dime and their partying as a splurge is an incorrect assessment. After all, a splurge is something that happens only every now and then.
