Poll Finds Approval for GOP Health Care Bill at 21 Percent

A new poll finds only one in five people currently support the bill
passed last week by House Republicans to replace ObamaCare.

The Quinnipiac University poll of 1,078 voters was taken from May 4-9 and showed disapproval at 56 percent.

The approval was just 21 percent for the American Health Care Act, four points higher than the last survey on the issue.

Twenty-three percent of respondents said they didn't know or couldn't answer the question.

Another question asked what should be done about ObamaCare. Nineteen percent of respondents said it should be totally repealed, 45 percent said parts of the bill should be repealed and 34 percent said there should be no repeal.

The poll comes as GOP lawmakers face anger at town hall events, particularly over the plan for coverage of pre-existing conditions. ObamaCare prevents insurers from charging higher rates to people with pre-existing conditions.

The bill passed after an agreement to provide billions of dollars in aid to help people with pre-existing conditions afford coverage, though critics say the amount is insufficient.

On "America's Newsroom" today, former CBO Director Doug Holtz-Eakin said it's not realistic for Democrats to propose keeping ObamaCare in place.

He pointed to the fact that one-third of U.S. counties have only one health insurance option, while Aetna just announced it would depart the ObamaCare markets entirely.

"I think if people understood what was inside [the bill] and the realistic choices they face, they'd think about it differently," Holtz-Eakin said.

I don't get it, I thought Obamacare was a catastrophe with low popularity among repubs?

That was before seeing what republicans had to offer.

Lets not forget what the charlatan promised and what he delivered.

It is. But this replacement is not an improvement. Following the rule of "if you think government is bad, more government is even badder."

correct...

this shows you how informed republican voters are.
We want results not establishment republican garbage.
this is also why Coulter and Drudge and many trump voters are close to saying we will be voting for someone else in the primary.

this poll should so trump and his team how close Trump is to being a 1 term president for alienating his base.

Health Insurers 'stunned' by Trump admin offer: If you support Trumpcare, we would fund CSRs

Trumpcare is toxic among health insurers and while sharing their many concerns about repealing the ACA and replacing it with the the inferior AHCA, insurers received an offer from the Trump administration.

Donald Trump chose to use millions of Americans health care as a bargaining chip, so he could strong arm health insurers into supporting his Trumpcare disaster they hate.

Health insurers were stunned by the offer.

Unbelievable. Trump isn't listening to health insurers very real concerns, about how Trumpcare is a terrible health care bill. He was only interested in their support, with this strong arm offer.

Insurance industry officials and state regulators have met repeatedly in recent months with senior Trump administration officials in an effort to explain that administration’s actions are jeopardizing health coverage for millions of Americans.

But in many cases, the meetings only left insurers and regulators more confused about the administration’s plans, according to attendees.

At one recent meeting, Seema Verma, whom Trump picked to oversee the federal Medicare and Medicaid programs, stunned insurance industry officials by suggesting a bargain: The administration would fund the CSRs if insurers supported the House Republican bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

“It made no sense,” said one official at the meeting.

Many insurers, as well as every leading patient and physician group, believe the House bill is deeply flawed. Independent analyses suggest the legislation, which Trump has enthusiastically backed, would increase the ranks of uninsured by 24 million over the next decade.

Cost Sharing Reduction is a discount that lowers the amount you have to pay for deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. Donald Trump basically used millions of Americans, who currently receive these discounts to make their health care more affordable, as a bargaining chip.

Topher Spiro used some strong words and called this a bribe.

This is nuts: the Trump admin tried to bribe insurers into endorsing Trumpcare. http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-pol-obamacare-trump-mismanagement-20170518-story.html …

BAHAHAHAHAHA you think Obama didnt negotiate with the insurers on Obamacare? You think Obama didnt fluff the insurers in order to get passed?

You think Insurers were peachy about covering preexisting conditions?

Now according to the liberal media, Trump is "Strong Arming insurance companies" which is kind of funny since liberals keep saying its a give away to the rich and insurance companies.

How do you think taxpayers ended up on the hook for all their losses while they ended up keeping the gains, this is more liberal histeria.

Trump is really setting a precedent here, lol, who do you think wrote Obamacare? This has to be the most naieve crap from left wing news sources ive ever seen. The republican plan is a joke, but obamacare wasnt any better.

Obama administration may use obscure fund to pay billions to ACA insurers

The Obama administration is maneuvering to pay health insurers billions of dollars the government owes under the Affordable Care Act, through a move that could circumvent Congress and help shore up the president’s signature legislative achievement before he leaves office.

Justice Department officials have privately told several health plans suing over the unpaid money that they are eager to negotiate a broad settlement, which could end up offering payments to about 175 health plans selling coverage on ACA marketplaces, according to insurance executives and lawyers familiar with the talks.

The payments most likely would draw from an obscure Treasury Department fund intended to cover federal legal claims, the executives and lawyers said. This approach would get around a recent congressional ban on the use of Health and Human Services money to pay the insurers.

The start of negotiations came amid an exodus of health plans from the insurance exchanges that are at the heart of the law. More than 10 million Americans have gained coverage through the marketplaces since they opened in 2014.

But many insurers are losing money on their new customers, who tend to be relatively sick and expensive to treat. As a result, some smaller plans have been driven out of business and a few major ones are defecting from exchanges for the coming year.

The administration’s efforts reflect the partisan thorns that still surround the sprawling law a half-dozen years after its passage. The payouts that officials want to salvage were part of an ACA strategy to help the marketplaces flourish early on.
