The Preamble to the US Constitution references the word "tranquility". You cannot have tranquility if certain demographic groups of your society have vastly inferior living standards and have a cause for resentment towards the status quo. Race riots proved that decisively.
Slavery was an expression of underlying lazyness and degeneracy of people who engaged in it. One of the major reasons why the South lost the civil war was that its industry was nonexistent and its rail network was far inferior to the north. South had a sham of an "elite". That "elite" liked to discuss "the cause" and existed like a parasite based on "king cotton".
Slavery was unsustainable, unnecessary and vile as an institution, but once you freed the slaves, what were you going to do with them? You can't undo many years of injustice overnight.
During Reconstruction, the south found a creative way of getting back to its dirty business. The KKK intimidated voters, and Jim Crow laws destroyed legal rights. Sharecropping destroyed any chance of economic self sufficiency.
US Revolutionary war was launched on the premise of "no taxation without representation". Compared to being a second rate citizen in your own country, being beaten, lynched, denied economic opportunities etc. no taxation without representation is a bullshit excuse.
Tranquility in society is not optional, any wise ruler would seek to achieve and maintain it. Ethnic problems were the bane of Austria-Hungary.
During Cold War, US cultural problem were a national security issue as the soviet union would seek to exploit any black/white tension.
As I said, anti semitism gives a thoroughly demented human being a chance to aritficially elevate himself above far more educated and polished individuals on the premise that "they don't get the influence of world jewry" (they being more educated and enlightened individuals). I have seen this phenomenon many times and will continue to see it because people will frequently try to distinguish themselves in something even if they have nothing.
